Meet Heather, the do-gooder data nerd!
Heather took an atypical path towards her MBA.
Fresh out of college, her first job was on a USAID project aimed at strengthening the private health sector in developing countries. As a part of the job, she worked with a team to develop the ProCapacity Index – an objective tool to help health clinics measure and improve its programmatic, financial, and organisational sustainability.
While working with USAID, she witnessed the power of data: their analysis showed one hospital management team that it had less than two weeks of cash reserves, yet it also had a strong customer base that was in need of some hygiene awareness and products. Like that, she fell in love with data, understanding that the combination of powerful data and business training can be a game changer in international development.
Heather only had one problem: she had not one clue about how to run a business, or how to rigorously collect and analyse data. By her own account, she couldn’t even tell you how to produce an Income Statement!
Not wanting to feel like a charlatan or snake oil salesman, she earned her MBA at Babson– a top notch school known for finance and entrepreneurship. She spent two years focusing on business analytics and marketing with the goal of returning to the international development sector. Not only did she ace creating financial statements, but she came out with a strong ability to leverage data to make sound business decisions.
After Babson, Heather moved to Kenya for a year to work with a health technology start-up. Using data to identify strong marketing areas, she helped bring in their first international and domestic sales. Heather’s now back in the US, working on her very own startup and consulting with small businesses – all while serving on the Grad Coach panel as well!
